I hope he knew how much he was loved by his family and friends. You could also share memories: I remember spending time with him on several occasions. He always had great stories about his youth.

Or maybe you could offer to help out. It might be as simple as saying something like I wish I were closer so I could hug you right now. Even though it may seem trite, most people will appreciate any kind words from their friends.
